How I Balance Being a Single Mom, Active Duty, and HR Grad Student
Life can get chaotic, especially when you’re juggling multiple roles like I am: single mom to four amazing kids, active duty in the Navy, and a graduate student working toward my degree; Master’s in Business Administration – Human Resources. It’s definitely not easy, but with a little organization ( very little), support, and ALOT of faith, I’ve found ways to keep everything in balance (well, most days!). Here’s how I manage:
1. Prioritizing and Planning
The key to managing so many responsibilities is planning ahead. I TRY to use my phone calendar religiously. I use my phone calendar for EVERYTHING! I use it for my appointments, the kids appointments, birthdays, friend’s birthdays, literally everything. My phone is my best friend. I set reminders for them to do homework, charge their ipads for school, devotion time etc…
2. Asking for Help
I had to learn that it’s okay to ask for help. Whether it’s leaning on family, or friends, having a support system is critical. From babysitting help to study sessions, I rely on my circle when things get overwhelming. The Navy has also been understanding, which allows me some flexibility when I need it.
Tip: Don’t be afraid to reach out to your community. People are more willing to help than you think!
3. Maximizing Study Time
Finding time to study while working and being a mom can feel impossible, but I’ve learned to make the most of any downtime. I study during lunch breaks, in the car waiting for my kids, or after they go to bed. I barely ever do homework at home.
4. Involving My Kids
My kids are my biggest motivation, and I make them part of my journey. I talk to them about why I’m in school and how it will benefit our family in the long run. I talk to them about my grades so that I can show them not I am not only showing the way but going the way.
5. Self-Care and Faith
I won’t lie, it’s hard to find time for myself, but I’ve realized that if I don’t take care of myself, I can’t take care of my kids or perform at work. I do nightly devotionals with my children, which keeps my faith strong and gives me peace. I also set aside 10-15 minutes a day just for myself, whether it’s journaling, praying, reading a book or just enjoying a nice shower.
Tip: Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine, even if it’s just a few minutes a day. It will recharge you for the challenges ahead.
6. Flexibility and Grace
Lastly, I remind myself that I can’t do everything perfectly, and that’s okay. Some days are harder than others, and I’ve learned to give myself grace when things don’t go as planned. Balancing multiple roles is tough, and it’s important to celebrate the small victories.
Tip: Be kind to yourself, and remember that progress, not perfection, is the goal.
Final Thoughts
Balancing single motherhood, active duty, and grad school has taught me resilience, time management, and the importance of leaning on faith and support systems. It’s not always smooth, but with a plan, support, and a little bit of grace, it’s possible to achieve your goals—even when life throws everything at you. I hope my journey can inspire others going through similar challenges to stay strong and keep moving forward!
